“Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it.”

William Penn born in London, England, was the son of a landowner. In his twenties he converted to the Quaker religion and was sent to jail multiple times, because he didn’t follow the church. What he is most known for is creating a colony called Pennsylvania, a place where people had religious freedom. He is also known to be one of the few colonists who were friendly to the Indians and negotiated with them, unlike others who forced them off the land. He was also known by many of his famous quotes. William pen stated, “Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it.” We applied this quote to the rule of law and freedom in my government class, meaning the law applies to everyone. I think the quote is talking about freedom. Justice allows us to be treated equally, and enables us to do the things we want to do. To be able to have justice we must be obedient. Meaning we must follow the rules set. If the rules are broken and we are not obedient your freedom gets taken away. Therefore you are not able to have justice. Premium is what you have to pay on your insurance, therefore if you don't pay, meaning being obedient, you don't get justice.

I remember when I went to the National Youth Leadership forum of Law and CSI, and people were not treated equally. Before we went to the mock trial we were given a dress code. If you didn’t follow the dress code you could not participate. Multiple people who though that the rules didn’t apply to them complained about not being able to participate. I thought it was stupid, because they knew what they had to wear and they chose to be disobedient. Then they complained about wasting money to come on the trip, but you knew what you had to have to participate. Therefore you wasted your own parent’s money. In this situation they did not deserve equality. The rest of us who wore the right attire were able to participate. The entire situation was completely fair.
